Bear Reading Clubs

We took a break these past two weeks from our usual Daily 5 reading and formed our "Bear Reading Clubs." These clubs consist of a few kids reading and talking about the 2 or 3 books they have chosen. The books they chose needed to be either fiction books or non-fiction books about bears. Day one we discussed how a reading club works.  After that each set of partners wrote and signed a partnership contract and also looked through their books and wrote down their expectations and ideas about the books and their club.

For the remainder of the week the children read and wrote notes about their books.

This week the kids finished up on their notes and completed a poster that displayed what they learned from their books. They presented their posters to their classmates.

The finished posters are fantastic!

Reading with the Head Start Preschoolers!

What a special time for my first graders and the Head Start little ones as they spent time together reading during our daily 5 Read to Someone.

Two-dimensional shapes - Snowflakes

Today the kids had a blast making snowflakes using two-dimensional shapes.  They all started with a hexagon in the center and used other shapes to create the snowflake.

Christmas Wishes

Christmas GIfts

My kids had so much fun painting a winter tree scene today.  These are going to make fantastic gifts for their parents.  They all did an amazing job.  They followed my step by step directions and I did not have to help with the drawings at all!!  I got this idea from a blog a while back. As soon as I can find the blog again, I will give her credit for this great idea!

Elf Diary

Oh the weather outside is frightful,
But the fire is so delightful,
And since we've no place to go,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

It was sooo cold outside today!  The kid's enjoyed staying inside for recess.

For the past few years The Elf on the Shelf has visited our classroom.  This year the children named him Lucky.  They told me that he is sooo "lucky" to be one of Santa's Elves.  Each day during our morning meeting the children write in their Dairy of an Elf about where Lucky has decided to hang out for the day.

Thanksgiving Rebus Writing

After reading several stories about pilgrims and Native Americans, the children did a fun writing activity using pictures.  THEY LOVED IT!  The stories they wrote are super cute!

Veteran's Day Soldiers

Last week we honored veterans and all the people that work in the armed forces.  Together we completed a tree chart of what soldiers are, have, and can do.  Then the children made soldiers and wrote 2 complete sentences with capitals and ending punctuation.  They loved making the soldiers!

Our Thankful List

Good Morning!  It's a beautiful day, inside anyway.  It's freezing outside! My fist graders were excited to share all that they are thankful for.  It's a wonderful list.  I am very thankful for my sweet group of first graders.
